Dylan starts with a tour in Japan, 16 concerts, most in Tokyo. Same standard set list as previous year, with one extra song before the intermission in slot 9. That extra song is another cover, the debut of That Old Black Magic (Harold Arlen/Johnny Mercer). This song is from the May 20th released new album Fallen Angels from the same project as Shadows In The Night, which features standards made famous by Frank Sinatra. That makes eight covers played each concert.

The Announcement of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature by Professor Sara Danius, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, on 13 October 2016: “The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2016 is awarded to Bob Dylan for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”. Dylan effectively goes into hiding, not even acknowledging the award until weeks later.
He says in November that, although he is very honored with the prize, he is unable to personally pick it up at the official awards ceremony in December. In his place, the American singer Patti Smith comes to the meeting in Stockholm, where she sings very emotional A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.
The Nobel Prize jury receives Dylan’s mandatory speech just in time (june 2017) to deliver him the Prize. He records and sends his speech to the Swedish Academy in an audio file, fulfilling the conditions to collect the prize money, 820.000 euros.
